Raining

Tuesday, 1 June 2010 (First day of Winter)

So for the past week, I have stayed close to home. It has been raining like crazy. I was told that we were supposed to get 1/3 of our annual rainfall in this week alone. So it has been freezing and raining. Also, Alison has been gone. I did not get called in at all except for the two normal days that I work. So it really has been a lonely week.

I only went out to go to the library and check out a few books on New Zealand and Australia. I had a goal of figuring out everything I wanted to see in Australia before Alison got home, so that she could look into what she wanted to see. Then we could plan our last trip to Australia by comparing what we want to see.

As for Alison, she went to Queenstown, Milford Sound, and Wanaka. She was going to be gone 7 days, but she said there was really nothing to do, as the towns were small. Oh, except for bungi jumping. Yeah, she got the courage to do the bungi jump. She showed me all the pictures. She said it was raining and snowing, so there was not much to do outside. She cut her trip short by two days and returned early. She told me that the roads started closing, so she was nervous that she would not be able to return home like she thought. Fortunately, she was able to come back.

So we have a new flatmate. She moved into the room that has been vacant for a couple months. Apparently, she moved in with one of our flatmates for a couple days, then she decided to move into the empty room. I am not sure how that goes, especially as we are not supposed to have people sleeping over.

So that is about it I guess. Not a lot to report on. I have worked two days so far this week. I don't know about the rest, but I am not too hopeful that I will work any of them. Next week, the Captain is coming home, and hopefully we will get to move in that weekend. We are still hoping that someone will take our room, but no one seems interested. At least at this point. We will still be able to move in, but we had money in a bond that we will get back if someone takes the room before we leave. Keep us in your prayers. We need all the money we can get at this point!

Traveling and Funny Stories

Wednesday 26 May 2010

I have to admit that I was kind of avoiding the blog, because I have had no motivation to write anything. Not that nothing has happened. I just don't want to take the time to write everything out. I have a little more motivation now.

This week has been a busy one. All my planning and research finally paid off. I am done with all the booking and organizing of the trip when Mom gets here. Now all I have to do is print it off. I am so glad it is done!

Also, Alison left for a trip on Sunday and will be gone for a week. So I get the room to myself. It has been quite strange not coming home and sharing all my experiences of the day with her. She went to Queenstown, did a Milford Sound cruise, Arrowtown (a mining town), and Wanaka. She also went bungi jumping. She texted me so I knew she was alive afterwords. I guess she really enjoyed it.

The day before she left, she had to open the restaurant and I had to babysit when she returned. So I did not really get to say goodbye to her. Babysitting was interesting. The preschool owner asked if I would like to babysit for them. I said of course. She has four kids. The youngest had a bad chest cold. She sounded terrible and several times looked like she was about to be sick. She went to bed early as did another one of her children. The youngest went to be fine, but later woke up and was wailing. She had a sore on her back and was trashing around. One of her kids brought medicine. I was not sure how much to put on, but gave her a minimal amount and tried to change her nappy. It took two of us to do it, as the girl refused to let us. After that, she calmed down and was about to fall asleep when her parents came in. All in all, the night was great, but the last 10 minutes were exhausting. I felt so bad for her.

Even though I did everything that I could in the babysitting situation, I still felt like I was doing everything wrong. I guess I couldn't have done too bad, because the preschool owner asked me to babysit again after work. That day was quite easy.

I have quite a few funny stories to share. So, I was leaving the flat one day. Our "driveway" is covered in rocks. So anytime someone drives in and out, your can hear the rocks crunch. It is also quite a long driveway. This has nothing to do with my story, but I just wanted to share it anyway. So Alison and I have had a few...episodes where we slip and have to grab onto the fence or something to quickly steady ourselves. Well, this time, I slipped on the rocks and landed right on my rear, quite hard. It was not pleasant, but of course my first thought is, "I hope no one saw that!" I don't think anyone did, but if someone did, they were probably laughing hysterically. I left the flat to mail letters and meet Alison, but failed to bring a waterproof jacket. It was sunny, so I didn't think I needed it. You would think after four months, I would figure out that you can never predict the weather by what it looks like. Always be prepared. Yeah, I got soaked.

Yesterday, I got soaked, too. I took a bus to work, but I had to walk from work as I had many errands to run. I had to pay rent. I was supposed to pay the day before, but didn't have time. I had to do several other things, and looked like a mess when I got home.

One night, one of our flatmates knocked on our door to ask if we knew how to use the oven. This may sound ridiculous, but we have a psychotic oven. It only turns on when it wants to. You have to jiggle the knobs and fiddle with the timer for a long time. So we did that. It worked, but the timer kept going off and we couldn't turn it off. It was most annoying. The next day, I used the stove and the timer was still going off. So I used the stove to make a quesadilla. It turned out fine, but the handle released the rest of the pan, which went clattering toward the ground, spreading oil everywhere. It was still hot. So I had to pick up the pan with a towel and tried desperately to clean up the floor. Even after cleaning it, it was still a bit slippery. It was funny to watch other people slip and try to figure out what was wrong. I know I should have warned them, but I was having too much fun seeing their clumsiness and confusion. Now they can see how I live.

At preschool, a little boy came up to me and said, "Look, poop." He showed me his fingers, and I could smell it. So I took him to the sink and told him to wash his hands, while I got his clothes ready. I realized he was just running water over his fingers, so I got soap for him, held him by his wrists and helped him scrub it off. Then I cleaned him, and changed him (making sure his fingers wouldn't touch me. I know he was clean, but it was the thought that grossed me out.)

A side note, people hang things up by using what is called U-Tak. It is a gummy substance that is supposed to be safe on the walls. The preschool uses this a lot. I have noticed that children take off pictures and papers from the wall, take the U-Tak, and start chewing it. They think it is like gum. It is quite disgusting.

I've noticed that the guys in the flat have stopped shutting the door completely when they use the toilet. It is quite disgusting. I haven't seen anything, but I can hear everything. Also, the kitchen is getting messier and messier. People don't clean up after themselves anymore. I will be really glad when we move out, so we won't have to clean up after people anymore. Just ourselves.

Alison and I were invited to a new comers luncheon. Alison couldn't go, but I decided to go. I RSVP ed via email and let them know I did not have a ride. They told me I could ride with them. The only problem was...I had no idea what they looked like. So I waited for them to come to me. A man did come to me and said he and his wife would take me after tea time. So I waited. Tea time was quite awkward. I really don't know that many people and everyone else knew each other. So they were talking to each other for 45 minutes, and I stood alone. Several people did come up to me and talked for a wee bit, but then would leave quickly. It was really hard to know what to do. They had their own circles and friends, and it felt strange just standing there, so I looked around. I was glad when the couple came and took me. We went to another couple's house. There was one other newcomer besides myself and 9 core members. So we were quite outnumbered. At first it was fine. We talked and got to know each other. We ate some soup (veggies and a meat that looked like corn beef), garlic bread, cheerios (a type of sausage), sausage rolls, chicken, and a caramel square. After dinner, they had us sit in the living room to watch a movie and talked about volunteering programs they offered. That felt really awkward, because we felt (or at least I felt) like they were pressuring us to volunteer in their programs. They said no pressure, but with 9 people staring at you asking if you had any questions and telling you what they do, it felt like a lot of pressure. I was kind of glad when they had to leave.

Well, I guess that is it for the interesting an funny stories. Now for future events. I was looking online for bus trips around some places I would like to go to, but won't get to do with my mom. I found that the times I was looking at were all dollar trips. I booked everything and discovered I had planned everything around Alison's birthday. So I had to go and change everything. Fortunately it all worked out. So I have a trip from Christchurch to Tasman, Tasman to Nelson, Nelson to Franz Josef Glacier, Franz Joseph Glacier to Fox Glacier, Fox Glacier to Greymouth and Christchurch to Wanaka and back for under $10. Greymouth to Christchurch will be a bit more, but it is a very cheap trip for me, and I am quite excited. For those of you who have no idea what these places are, they are all supposed to be amazingly beautiful places. Tasman is a National Park, and Wanaka is a lake. I think the Glaciers speak for themselves. Neslon is just a really pretty area on the Northern point of the South Island. Greymouth is just a place I have to go to in order to get back to Christchurch.

After this trip and two day trips and one more multi-day trip with Alison, I will have completely covered everything I wanted to do in the Southern Island. In the North Island, the last thing I would like to do is visit Lake Toupo. I might do this right before I leave New Zealand to come home. It is exciting to know I will be able to see all of New Zealand before I have to leave.

Now, I am again, finally caught up.

Where Have I Been?

Thursday 20 May 2010

It has been quite a long time since my last post. I don't even know where to begin. Thank you for those of you who wrote me a note of concern for not writing more blogs. I am fine, just really really busy. So now let me see where I left off.

7 May, it was my mom's birthday and I got to talk to her. It was really nice to talk for a while. She told me when her flight to New Zealand was. That is when this busyness started happening. I have been planning for a trip of New Zealand with my mom. It has been consuming my life, and I have not been out of doors as much, because I have been online so much. It doesn't help that our Internet has been getting slower and slower. I have, as of now, completely planned and organized 1/2 of our trip. I know exactly what I want for the other half, but it all depends on if I get the two days I work off that week. I have been trying to work it out with my boss, but it has been tricky. As soon as she gives me word, I will be able to finish the rest of the trip.

All this planning has been really interesting, because I have been planning for three people. I am planning for my mom and I, trying to make sure she gets to see everything she wants to see, and that I get to see most of what I want to see. Also, Alison will join us on some of the trip, so I am trying to fit everything in and find tours that will satisfy everyone. Plus I am trying to find the cheapest stuff, emailing places, having credit card issues and trying to work THAT out, asking questions like crazy...It has been hard. I have to admit it though, I love it. I love this organizing. The problem is, my head starts spinning at night. At one point, I stayed up until 4:00am. Lately, I have been sleeping around 2:00am, if not later, and getting up at 6:00am. It is starting to catch up with me though.

Mother's Day was really special. We were invited to the Captain's house for lunch. We bought them some flowers (especially for the Captain's wife as she is a mother). At first, we talked about things that were different with the cultures. They talked (and later showed) us hot water bottles and something that I can't remember the name of, but it was a barley bag. They found it fascinating that we eat pumpkin as a dessert. They can only see it as a vegetable. They thought it was the funniest thing.

For lunch, we had meat. They actually didn't know what the meat was, because the Captain's sister brought them meat. They cooked it, but didn't know what it was. They knew it was either lamb or beef. We all decided it was lamb. We ate it with a almost sweet type of gravy. We also had peas, carrots, potatoes, and parsnips. It was good. For dessert, we had mixed fruit, Hokey Pokey ice cream (our favorite!), and mini pavs (pavlova) with whipped cream. Our first pavlovas, finally. It was INCREDIBLE!!!! Then we sat and had tea and talked. They asked us a lot of questions, and we asked them questions. They are actually going on a trip to Greece and Turkey (other places too). Anyway, at one point, we asked if they knew anyone who would be willing to let us stay at their house. They volunteered. The Captain's wife actually got really excited and started talking about it. They showed us their house and it seems like it would be amazing! We might have to take the bus more, but honestly, it would be way cheaper and WAY nicer to stay at their house. So we left the house feeling lighter than air. We talked to our landlady and she said that she would advertise our room. We are hopeful, but we really want someone to take our room! Although, we can't leave until the Captain and his wife return from their trip.

As for work, I am back down to two days a week. The fortunate thing is, I have actually worked three days a week for two weeks. So that is nice. Not as good as full time, but I will take what I can get. I have been doing quite well dealing with screaming and crying children, becoming a handy tissue for the children, changing nappies, cleaning wees, cleaning soiled nappies...One day, it was raining, and I actually had two offers to take me home. I thought that was really sweet.

Something else that has been sweet is the children themselves. I think I mentioned before that when children turn five, they go to the New Entrant class in Primary School. Well, there is a primary school that is attached to the preschool, but they are separated by a gate. So when the Primary kids have recess, some of them with younger brothers or sisters come to the gate. Well, one girl who just recently turned five is now at that school and was asking for me to come to the gate. She even asked how old I was. I told her and she said I was really old, but her grandpa was the oldest in her family. "He is like 28 or 29." I thought that was pretty funny. Also, today I was leaving and a girl said, "I want to give you a cuddle." So she gave me a cuddle and she said, "I will miss you." Several people heard that and said, "Awwww." I will not be back until Monday, so I thought that was pretty special.

So now on to the interesting stories. One time, when I took the shuttle back home, a man who smelled horribly like smoke sat right next to me...and it wasn't like there was "absolutely no available seats". When the shuttle even slightly moved, he would practically fall over me. I had to lean and look out the window and put my hand up to my face to dampen the smell. Another time in the shuttle, the driver was not used to the brakes. He would slam on the breaks and it would jerk abruptly. I pushed the button for the shuttle to stop, and then I stood up. I have learned to stand up before the bus stops, because some drivers forget the button was pushed and skip the stop. Well, as soon as I let go of the pole to transfer to another pole, he slammed on the breaks, and I went flying toward the windshield. I frantically grabbed onto something to keep from going through the windshield or knocking myself out. Fortunately, I got a pole and quickly left the bus.

So after some pretty strenuous days, Alison and I decided to venture out and make caramel corn. Now, we did not have all the ingredients to the recipe, so we substituted. We used honey instead of Karo syrup (as New Zealand does not seem to carry corn syrup at all). We only had one bag of popcorn, so we popped it and started making the caramel. Well, I read the recipe wrong. I saw the 1/2 stick of butter, and ended up putting 1/2 Cup of butter. Well, this doubled the recipe, but we didn't double the rest of the ingredients. We finished and poured it over the popcorn. At first we thought it was good. Then the sweetness of the honey got to be WAY too much. We couldn't take it anymore and had to stop. Then, we started laughing hysterically realising we each ate 1/2 stick of butter in the caramel. It started to make us feel sick, but we couldn't stop laughing. We laid on the bed moaning and groaning and attempted to brush our teeth. Alison tried to drink water and almost choked to death. We actually did pretty well brushing our teeth until I wondered about detox for sugar, and we started laughing all over again. We finished brushing our teeth and hobbled back to bed to continue our moaning and groaning. It was an interesting night.

Well, that is a summary of what has been happening in my life. I am finally all caught up with everything. I am feeling so much better now. I have had a lot of things I have not done, so it is nice to be up to date with everything. Well, until next time...

Week of Events

Thursday 6 May 2010

It has been getting colder and colder. Alison and I have been freezing during the night. Although, just when we think it is getting cold for good, we have a day like yesterday and today. It still is pretty cold in the shade, and the wind is really cold; but in the sun, it is quite hot.

I have had a full week of work, and I get to work tomorrow, too. This week and last week are the first full weeks of work I have had. The thing is, this is my last full week of work. Starting next week, I will be working two days a week. I might get more work, but as of right now, two days a week is all I get. I have applied to other jobs, but advertisements for jobs seem to be scarce.

I have had a challenge in trying to figure out what days I could work. On the schedule, I would be working Mondays and Thursdays. The thing is, I wanted to work two days in a row. This would make traveling easier. I asked, and it seemed like this would work out if another person would be willing to switch. The other person was willing to switch, but the preschool owner accidentally gave me the wrong days. So I went back and forth with her and the preschool director to get everything straightened out. This took me the whole week to finally get it sorted out. So now, the plan is, I will be working on Mondays and Tuesdays starting next week. So I was finally able to email my mom so she can work on flights to come to New Zealand!

There really isn't a whole lot to report on for this week, except for Sunday. Alison and I went to Church and after the service, the pastor (Captain) and his wife asked us what we were doing next Sunday. We said we didn't have any plans. They wanted to invite us over for Lunch. As all of you hopefully know, next Sunday is Mother's Day. The pastor's wife said, "Our children won't be around, and your mother's aren't here." They wanted to celebrate with us, since we are so far from home and our mothers. We thought that was the sweetest thing in the world. We gratefully accepted, touched at their thoughtfulness.

Then we went to Alison's work. She was asked to work, but wasn't sure if she had to go (it was a kind of suggestion). So I went in with her, to make sure. Well, they did need her, but her manager asked if I wanted something to drink. Alison told him I liked hot chocolate, so he paid for my drink. Later he said I could pick up an apron and start working. Still later, he asked if I wanted any fries. At this point, I got kind of antsy and wanted to walk a bit, so I declined. I thought it was sweet of him offering me so much.

Something really special about this week is that it is always a week of things to remember. Last Friday was my brother's birthday. This coming Friday is my mom's birthday. This Sunday is Mother's Day. I always felt stressed out about this, because everything happened at once.

Well, it is almost the weekend. One more day, and then it is time to sleep in...
